Washington became the 42nd of the 50 United States on November 11, 1889. It is the only state to be named after a president. Washington's nickname "The Evergreen State" by was given to it by C.T. Conover for its abundant evergreen forests. The state's capital is Olympia and houses the dormant volcano Mount St. Helens.
