Utah became the 45th of the 50 United States on January 4, 1896. The state's capital is Salt Lake City, home of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Utah is nicknamed the "Beehive State" because Utahans relate the beehive symbol to industry and the pioneer virtues of thrift and perseverance. This symbol became the emblem for the state and was maintained on the seal of the State of Utah when it was established as a state.
