Iowa became the 29th of the 50 United States on December 28, 1846. Nicknamed the "Hawkeye State", a name first suggested by James G. Edwards as a tribute to indian leader Chief Black Hawk. Past President Herbert Clark Hoover, in office 1929-33, was born in West Branch, Iowa in 1874. John Wayne and Johnny Carson are also among some of the famous people to have lived in Iowa.
